Kiddush for Hilda Schindler

This month, Hilda Schindler, Honorary Life-President of Southgate Progressive Synagogue, held a kiddush to celebrate her 70th year in England having escaped Nazi oppression in Germany just six weeks before the start of World War 2.
When she arrived in England, Hilda had dreams of studying medicine, but life was to take her down a totally different path. At 19 she went into domestic service. It was hard work to keep the huge household and to do all the cooking, yet whenever she had time off, she managed to spend time with other Jewish youngsters at FLPJYG (the Federation of Liberal and Progressive Jewish Youth Groups) in St. John's Wood or Stamford Hill - dodging the air raids of course! Due to these experiences, her dreams turned towards a life long total involvement with youngsters - youth clubs, religion school teaching, lectures, talks and full time education, both here and in Israel. Included among her ex pupils are at least three Rabbis.
Together with others, including Rabbi Lionel Blue, the Honourable Lily Montagu and Rabbi Van der Zyl, Hilda was involved with early plans aimed at creating a Rabbinic College to replace what the Nazis had destroyed. This collaboration resulted in the opening of the Leo Baeck College, what an achievement!
In the 1980s, following Lady Elizabeth Maxwell's 'Remembering for the Future', Hilda contributed many hours of interviews resulting in the production of an important travelling exhibition 'Refugees from Nazism' which is now housed at the Jewish Museum. More recently a video, as part of 'Refugee Voices' has been added to it.
Very many of the three generations of Hilda's ex-pupils were at the Shabbat Service and her Kiddush, including a close friend from her FLPJYG days, several Rabbis plus, of course, her pupil Stephen Howard, the Rabbi of SPS. Sixty five years of membership of SPS have replaced the family Hilda lost in the concentration camps of the Third Reich. She was presented with a certificate recording the Synagogue's donation on her behalf to WIZO's Day Care Centres which she also supports.
Much loved and treasured we all wish her many more happy and productive years contributing towards the Jewish community.

Fair Trade at SPS

Our Synagogue was ably represented at the Enfield Festival Celebrations by the Social Action Group who, being part of the Enfield Borough Fair Trade Group, were in attendance to promote Fair Trade goods and, at the same time, to publicise the Shul's commitment to Fair Trade.

SPS Tea Party

A wonderful tea party was recently attended by over 70 of our much loved and respected senior citizens.
Rikud sang and danced brilliantly, however the main attraction was the conversation, photos and catching up opportunities...which were so very enjoyable!
Many thanks go to the Welfare Committee, the members of our congregation who provided all the refreshments and, most especially, to Paula Wood who coordinated the whole event. This is definitely an occasion which must be repeated!

News from Feodosiya

SPS' Social Action Group was very pleased when they were able to raise enough money to send to Feodosiya so that the community could clean and repair their precious but badly vandalised war memorial which had been daubed with Muslim signs and graffiti.
This is a proud community struggling to re-discover their Judaism after the horrors and prejudice of communism and war. SPS is proud to support them.
If you have any fund raising ideas please contact the Social Action Group via the Synagogue office.
If you would like to join the Group we would be really delighted!

Sponsored Walk for Feodosiya

On Saturday 26th September The Social Action Group, along with the youngsters from Spy Club, are doing a sponsored walk to raise money for Feodosiya -
We are aiming to achieve two important things:
It costs just £400 a year to pay for a Religion School Teacher to give the children (some of them pictured) the opportunity to develop their Jewish identity, learn about the Jewish faith and to speak Hebrew. We want to raise this money each year.
It only costs £5 to provide a food parcel to feed a needy person for a month. We want to support as many people as we can. Here are some examples of the people we will be helping:
· Galina, 65 years old, a widow. Her son was injured in Afghanistan, has no pension and cannot work to support her.
· Anatoly, 24 years old, disabled, cannot work and lives with his 79 year old grandmother. He cannot work and has no income.
· Tamara, 62 years old - lives alone, no relatives. Her income is only £1.70 per month.
· Olga, 15 years old - lives with her divorced mother. They receive no alimony from the father and they receive only £8 (in food coupons) for a whole month.
If you could do the walk with us please do - phone Lyn Davis 020 8342 1110 or Joy Cox 020 8366 9493.
If you wish to sponsor a food parcel or set up a direct debit of £5 per month for 10 months each year, also contact us.
These are very worthwhile causes and you would be performing a Rosh Hashanah mitzvah at the same time!
