SPS Tea Party

Many thanks to all these people in the Welfare Group who, led by Daphne Stern, do such a very worthwhile job throughout our SPS community. A special thanks to Lee Alexander, who after so many years as her deputy, has decided to retire.

Well, this afternoon a lovely Tea Party took place in the newly refurbished Schindler Hall, so that our older members could meet, chat and have a really good time together. In true Jewish style there was lots of sumptuous nosh to eat, happily washed down with tea and coffee. Though really the important focus was to catch up with old friends and acquaintances and have the chance to swap both photos and memories. Our delightful girls in Rikud entertained brilliantly, as always, and were a real treat to watch.

Further thanks go to all of those who contributed the food, helped in the preparation and organisation, and stayed throughout the afternoon to ensure that the event was the success it that it deserved to be. Everyone who came thoroughly enjoyed it and had a great time; we absolutely must all do it again!

    SPS celebrate Yom Ha'azmaut

Yom Ha'atzmaut, the celebration of Israel's Independence, was indeed a celebration at SPS. Many thanks to the 60 people who attended and who helped to make it such a great event.

The Service was led by several members of the Shul, each sharing in the opportunity to honour those who gave their lives for the State of Israel and also to pray for future peace. Yartzheit candles were lit by the lovely Rikud girls before they danced for us which then led to the rest of us trying to dance too. Well, as best we could!

Israeli food was next, to revive our flagging energy, then it was on to the huge variety of activities.

Happily the raffle raised £65 for Hadassah, the Israeli hospital for children, and has already been sent to them. So what a great afternoon it was! Thanks to the Israel Group for all their hard work in organising it, and, of course, we hope to see even more people enjoying Yom Ha'Atzmut next year.

      SPY club show 2011

On Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April the Schindler Hall was filled with the audience, cast and crew for ‘Alice the Musical’ by Mike Smith, from the book ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll. A cast of 21, ranging in age from the 7 year old Executioner to the 17 year old Gryphon, entertained their audience with a highly amusing and well-acted performance. The solo singing was excellent and the lively chorus singing and dancing had the audience toe-tapping and clapping along. Many congratulations to the director, Jess Wood, and her cast.

The costumes and props were fun and quirky thanks to very creative parents and to the children, who made many of them themselves. The Cyril Phillips award for outstanding contribution to SPY Youth was presented to Tasha Kafka and the Mark Lynn award for Youth Leadership was presented to Jess Wood by Pearl Phillips and Shirley Lynn.

We were pleased to welcome The Deputy Mayor of Enfield, Christiana During, as our guest at the Sunday performance. She warmly and enthusiastically chatted to the performers and audience during the interval and thanked us for inviting her, saying we should be happy that these children were our future.

        Religion School Seder

The final day of Religion School for this term was celebrated with the Cheder Seder, which was ably led by Student Rabbi Kate Briggs. Jacki Winter led the singing, which she accompanied with her guitar; parents and children also took turns in narrating the Seder.

The main table looked eye-catching with its Seder plate, matzah cover, Elijah’s cup and the lit candles.

The long tables were complete with numerous boxes of matzah, charoset, maror, parsley and salt water.

The children enjoyed a meal of eggs, fruit, crisps and chocolate before continuing the Seder with prayers and songs. Of course, they also found the Afikoman.

The Seder was thoroughly enjoyed by parents and children alike. Many thanks to Kate for leading her first children’s Seder, to Barbara for all the shopping, to Mandi for the Afikoman gifts, to Ray, the teachers and helpers for setting up the Schindler Hall and finally to all the helpers for clearing away, washing up and leaving the Hall immaculate.
